Why Pilates Fundamentals Classes Are Anything But Basic

At Love Pilates, we’re big believers in slowing down to build strong foundations. While it can be tempting to jump straight into faster-paced or more advanced classes, there’s something incredibly powerful about starting with the basics – especially when it comes to Reformer and Tower Pilates.

Our Fundamentals classes are designed for beginners, but trust us – they’re anything but easy. Done properly, they’ll challenge your mind, your breath, and your body in all the right ways.

Why Start with Fundamentals?

Because how you begin matters. Pilates is a highly intentional practice, and learning the right technique from day one sets you up for long-term success.

In Fundamentals, you’ll learn:

  • How to breathe properly and coordinate breath with movement

  • Where your neutral spine and pelvis are (yes, it matters!)

  • How to activate your deep core muscles, not just your abs

  • How to move with control, precision and purpose

  • What “working smarter, not harder” really means

You’ll also start to understand the importance of moving your spine in all directions – flexion, extension, rotation and lateral movement. These patterns are key to maintaining a healthy spine, improving posture, and preserving mobility and flexibility as we age.

A stiff spine can lead to pain, limited movement, and compensations in other parts of the body. But when we move the spine well and often (as we do in Pilates), we support not just our posture and core – but our long-term spinal health.

This isn’t about racing through reps or pushing through burn – it’s about understanding your body and how it moves. And once you have that awareness, everything else becomes so much more effective.

Pilates Isn’t “Easy” – When You’re Doing It Right

Let’s clear something up: Pilates may look graceful and gentle from the outside, but when you’re activating the right muscles – especially the deep stabilisers – it can be intensely challenging.

In Fundamentals, we focus on proper muscle recruitment so you’re not relying on your big movers (like your quads or upper traps) to do all the work. Instead, we teach you to move from the inside out – engaging the small, deep muscles that support your spine, hips and posture.

It’s not about how big the movement is – it’s about how well you control it. And when you get that right? You’ll feel stronger, taller, more balanced and more connected.

Why Reformer and Tower Are Ideal for Beginners

Both the Reformer and Tower provide gentle resistance and feedback to help you find alignment, control and support in every movement. They’re especially helpful for beginners because they:

  • Offer adjustable spring resistance

  • Help you isolate and activate the correct muscles

  • Support your body through unfamiliar or tricky movements

  • Create a smooth, flowing experience that builds confidence

Learning the fundamentals on this equipment helps you feel safe, supported and strong as you develop your practice.
