Finding Your Flow – Returning to Work as a New Mum
The return to work after having a baby can feel like a massive gear shift. One moment you’re knee-deep in nappies, sleepless nights and newborn cuddles… and the next you’re expected to switch into ‘professional mode’ as if nothing’s changed.
But everything has changed – especially you.
At Love Pilates, we know how many emotions come up when it’s time to head back to work. Excitement, guilt, overwhelm, relief – sometimes all in the same hour. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Every mum’s experience is different, and it takes time to find your rhythm.
Here are some gentle reminders and practical tips to help you navigate the juggle:
1. Ease In (If You Can)
If your workplace allows it, consider a staggered return – maybe a few days a week to start, or shorter hours while you and bub adjust. Giving yourself time to find your footing can make a world of difference.
2. Redefine Productivity
You might not be able to stay back late or take on every project like you used to – and that’s okay. You’re still capable, valuable, and committed. You’ve just got more on your plate now, and your time is even more precious. Trust that quality trumps quantity.
3. Lean on Your Village
Whether it’s your partner, a parent, a friend, or a daycare educator – having trusted support makes all the difference. You don’t have to carry it all on your own. Asking for help isn’t a weakness, it’s smart.
4. Build in Time for You
It might sound impossible, but carving out just 30 minutes a day for yourself can be game-changing. A walk, a Pilates class, a cup of tea without interruption – whatever helps you reconnect to you, beyond the roles you play.
5. Ditch the Guilt
You’re doing your best. Whether you’re working out of necessity, ambition or a mix of both, returning to work doesn’t make you any less of a present, loving parent. You’re showing your child what it means to follow through, show up and adapt – that’s something to be proud of.
At Love Pilates, we’re mums too – we get it. The juggle is real, and the transition can feel wobbly. But we also know you’re stronger, wiser, and more capable than you realise.
6. Outsource what you can
One of the best pieces of advice from a fellow working mum and mentor was to outsource whatever was possible to lighten the load - even if it felt a bit indulgent and even if it required cutting back on something else to afford it.
Cleaning the house was the ultimate time and energy thief and ultimately took precious time out of our weekends - time that could have been spent with the kids. So now, a fortnightly clean is in the budget and a non-negotiable - and the smell of bleach has never been sweeter. Other ideas to outsource - washing & ironing; meal preparation; grocery delivery service to your door - if it’s stealing your joy - there’s bound to be an outsource option!
So, take it one step (and one breath) at a time. You’ve got this – and we’re right here with you.
